If there a significance when the White witch (from in the Chronicles of Narnia) turn the animals into stone?

I don't remember anything to do with Christianity, that mentioned anybody being turned into stone. But in Greek Mythology, which of course featured Gods, there were the Gorgons, and most notably Medusa who turned people into stone.
